Aetna Insurance Company Introduction

Aetna’s  Continental Life Insurance Company of Brentwood, Tennessee (Geez, that’s a mouthful… let’s just call it Aetna moving forward) has been in the Medicare market in Michigan for 28 years. There have been previous companies associated with Aetna prior to this, but they are no longer available in the state. This is until recently, which we’ll discuss below.

Aetna carries a strong A excellent by AM Best, showing they are financially stated.  They are headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee

In Michgan, Aetna carries PPO Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplements, and Medicare Part D plans. Aetna does not offer a Dual Eligibility plan in Michigan.

Accendo Insurance Company Introduction

Accendo Insurance Company is an Aetna Affiliate that’s part of the CVS family companies. Currently, the only offer Medicare Supplements in 14 states, including Michigan.

As Accendo is a new insurance company, it does not have an AM Best rating. However, it’s research that I’ve conducted has noted that as it’s under the Aetna umbrella, the AM Best rating is consistent with the main company. Accendo Insurance company is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Aetna Medigap In Michigan

*Plan F is only available to those with a Medicare Part B effective date prior to 1/1/20. ** Plan N's Coinsurance is up to $20 for doctor visits and $50 for ambulance rides that do not result in a hospital admission.

Aetna Medicare in Michigan offers two different underwriting types for Medicare Supplements.

Guaranteed Issue/Medigap Open Enrollment- During these instances there are no underwriting questions. Medigap Open Enrollment is 7 months long. The first instance is when you turn 65. You’re eligible to sign up for a Medigap plan 3 months prior to your 65th birthday, the month of your birthday, to 3 months after your birthday. Furthermore, you have a special enrollment period when you lose work coverage (either from yourself or your spouse.) This period is 7 months from the day you lose coverage OR the last day you work, whichever happens first. During this time, you can chose ANY Medigap plan letter.

Under Guarantee Issue rights, the time frame and available to sign up and Medigap plan letters may be limited.

Fully Underwritten- Anytime you want to change Medigap Plans or companies and you don’t meet Guaranteed Issue, Special Enrollment Period, or Medigap Open Enrollment you are required to pass medical underwriting. You can be denied for a Medigap plan during this time frame due to your health.

Aetna and Accendo offer Plan F (if you were Part B effective PRIOR to 1/1/2020), Plan G, and Plan N.

Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan F

Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan F is considered the “Cadillac” of Medigap plans. It covers all Medicare approved deductibles and co-insurance costs for the member.

Most agents love Plan F because it tends to be the most expensive plan AND the easiest to explain. This means that they get a higher commission and you understand it better. However, as it’s the most expensive, it also may not be the most efficient plan for you.

Furthermore, due to claims history, Plan F tends to have the highest annual increases.

That being said, seniors on Medicare also love Plan F because it’s easiest to understand. They simply have to pay the Part B premium and the Medigap monthly cost and the vast majority of their healthcare expenses.

Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G

Plan G covers everything that Plan F covers EXCEPT the Part B deductible. For 2020, the Part B deductible is $198. Before Medicare or the Aetna Medicare Supplement pays anything, you have to pay the deductible.

However, you can have significant savings compared to Plan F, even paying the deductible.

Review the rates below for Aetna and Accendo Medicare Supplements and the difference between Plan F and G.  Add $16.50 per month for Plan G to determine the total cost for Plan G and evaluate if you get a significant break in your premiums.

Aetna Medicare Advantage Plans In Michigan

Aetna offer Medicare Advantage PPO’s and the Better Health Premier Plan for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

Medicare Advantage, or Part C, offer the same basic benefits as “Original” Medicare, but are administered by a private insurance company instead of the federal government. This saves Medicare money by outsourcing their administrative costs.

On top of offering the same basic benefits, Medicare Advantage plans can offer additional benefits. These can include (and often do) Part D plans, dental and vision insurance, gym memberships, and a host of other services.

Medicare Advantage plans generally cost less or nothing up front, but you’ll pay for any services you receive. This includes doctor’s visits, tests and imaging, and hospitalizations.

It’s also important to know that if you want to switch back to “Original” Medicare, you can during the annual Open Enrollment period. However, if you’ve had an illness or injury, you may not medically qualify for a Medicare Supplement.

Aetna Medicare Advantage Plans DO offer Silver Sneakers

Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO Plans

PPO’s stand for Preferred Provider Organizations.

These plans allow you to use any providers that accept the Aetna Medicare Advantage plan. Furthermore, you generally do not need prior authorization in order to get specialized testing or services. However, you will pay more for services when your doctor is not “in network”

Aetna Better Health Premier Plan

Aetna’s Better Health Premier Plan is a Medicare Advantage plan specifically designed for people that are eligible for full benefits with Medicaid and also qualify for Medicare. These are known as Dual Enrollee’s or D-SNP plans. They help coordinate care and payment between Medicaid and Medicare and offer additional benefits as well for low income individuals.

Better Health Premier is only available in the following counties in Michigan:

Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Van Buren, Wayne, and Macomb Counties.

Furthermore, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 21 or older
  • Qualify for full Medicaid benefits and Medicare Parts A & B.
  • Live in a service area (the counties above.

Aetna Medicare Part D Plans In Michigan

Aetna uses Silver Script for Medicare Part D plans.

I’m not going into too much depth concerning Part D plans because each company has an individual formulary that sets up what drugs they cover and at what tiers (or price levels) they are listed. Formularies can change and it’s better that you work with someone concerning your medications to ensure it’s covered. However, there are a few tips I can give concerning Aetna specific:

  • Aetna plans come with Part D plans. Signing up for a different Part D plan with disenroll your health coverage.
  • Medicare Supplements do not come with Part D Plans. You will need a stand alone plan.
  • If you shop for a plan with a Medicare Supplement, total cost is more important than the premium. Premium plans may be more monthly, but less when you fill prescriptions.

What's The Verdict For Aetna Medicare Michigan Plans?

Aetna is a highly respected company with strong financials. Furthermore, it has incredibly competitive Medicare Supplement rates in Michigan for all age levels.

Aetna does have a reputation for shutting down insurance companies in a state after a few years and reopening a new one. This leaves people that are too sick to switch locked into a company where all the healthy people are leaving. This can expedite significant increases in premium.

With Accendo recently opening, I don’t that’s the case at this time. Continental Life Insurance Company has been in Michigan for over two decades and has been stable.

At this time I would suggest Aetna as a strong contender for your Medicare Supplement dollars.

With Medicare Advantage, a close examination of your medications, doctors, and additional benefits would need to be completed.

What's The Verdict for Accendo Medicare Supplement Plans?

Accendo does not offer a Medicare Advantage plan currently and are not competitive against other Aetna companies currently. Furthermore, as Accendo is a new company, they have not had an opportunity to establish claims experience and stabilize their premium costs.

Right now, I don’t think that Accendo is the company for seniors in Michigan to work with, but that could change in the future.
